Today in Ironton MO.,a normally peacefull town of approximately 14,000 residents, was awakened by gunfire and tear gas cannons being fired.

Iron County Sheriff, Allen W. Mathes was conducting a welfare check on an individual whom several members of an internet chat room, that had emailed him asking him to investigate the mental and physical well being of one of Irontons' residents.

When the Sheriff arrived at the apartment complex at 203 W Wayne St., he made contact with the individual in question. It was at that point the Sheriff was verbally abused and threatened by the obviously disturbed individual.

The Sheriff stated, "He was like some kind of mad man. He kept swearing profanitys at me, wanting to know who had sent me. I told him several times that i was only there to see if he was okay. When i could finaly get a word in, i asked him if he owned any firearms. Thats when he slammed the door on me and said he had a 357 and knew how to use it if i did not leave. Then i did the only thing i could do for my own, and the general publics' safety, i called in the Swat team to remove him for a 72 hour psychological evaluation."

According to witness statements, thats when things got alot worse. The individual baracaded himself in his apartment upon seeing the arrival of the Swat team, and began shooting a handgun through his window at Sheriffs officers and screaming profanitys at them. After several minutes of gunfire, the disturbed man seemed to run out of ammunition. The Swat team took that as an opportunity to end the situation by firing 3 tear gas canisters into the residence, hopefully rendering the man helpless so that they might take him into custody without further incedent.

Sheriffs' officers used a device called a "door knocker", which is a 50 pound cylindrical tool that is swung repeatedly against a door to knock it off its hinges to obtain entry into the suspects apartment. The suspect was located in a closet hiding under a blanket. He was then taken into custody and remanded to the Iron County Mental Health Facility.

A Sheriffs' department spokesman stated that no one was injured in the confrontation, and that further charges would be pending the outcome of the mans mental health evaluation. Should the man be found competant to stand trial, he faces charges of disturbing the peace, resisting arrest with violence, battery of a law enforcement official, assault with a deadly weapon, and six counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement official.
